This will give better off axis performance. A waveguide is typically used to match the dispersion pattern between the tweeter and the midrange/bass driver at the crossover region. Most active monitor speakers use a waveguide. With that being said I would rather have a well designed passive than a poorly designed active but everything else being equal I would rather have active.Ībout dispersion, most active speakers depending on design have better off axis response than many home speakers. You only have to get one wire to passive speaker where active you need to get a signal wire and power which would be difficult in a lot of homes. The reality is every speaker designer knows active is a better design but passive is done because of cost and ease of wiring. Being active has a LOT of advantages like lower distortion, greater dynamics, better attack, more precise crossover, speaker protection, amp matched to drivers, no passive crossover, etc. A monitor speaker is basically the same as any other speaker but it is active. There a couple of misconceptions about monitor speakers that keep getting spread on many of the forums. However Monitors say they are for "nearfield" use - does this have something to do with why we can't use them in larger HT rooms? More expensive monitors can go as high as 220W RMS, so loudness is not an issue. This go me thinking: since all of the music produced is tuned on these monitor speakers, wouldn't it provide the most faithful reproduction on the same type of speakers in HT? What advantage do we gain by buying $10,000 pair of speakers? I noticed that overwhelming majority of studios in USA are using Yamaha HS7 or HS8, and European studios are little bit more diverse with Yamaha HS8, KRK, or DynAudio monitors in their studios. ![]() I started YouTube investigating studio videos of major EDM and HipHop stars of today, like Avicii, Martin Garrix, Swedish House Mafia, Atlanta Trap music groups, Gucci Mane, Armin Van Buren and many more. This cheap $450 pair sounds better (flatter, accurate, transparent) than my main Polk Tower speakers powered by monoblocks amps and Arcam receiver. ![]() I recently purchased Yamaha HS8 for my synthesizer, and I was blown away by the quality.
